MISSION
Midori & Friends harnesses the power of music to transform the lives of children and enrich their communities. Through accessible music education programs, Midori & Friends cultivates a joy of learning, a spirit of service, and courageous self-expression for all, illuminating pathways to a brighter future.
For 34 years Midori & Friends, founded by violin virtuoso Midori, has invested in over 330,000 students in NYC by providing tuition-free music education programs. As it ignites positive social change in the rising generations of students and their families, our dynamic music education programs enrich our city and the individual lives that make it great.

Founder
Midori is a visionary artist, activist and educator who explores and builds connections between music and the human experience and breaks with traditional boundaries, which makes her one of the most outstanding violinists of our time. She has performed with many of the world’s most prestigious orchestras and has collaborated with some of the most outstanding musicians of our time, including Leonard Bernstein, Yo-Yo Ma, and many others.
As someone deeply committed to furthering humanitarian and educational goals, she has founded several non-profit organizations: the New York City-based Midori & Friends; MUSIC SHARING, based in Japan; Partners in Performance (PiP), which helps to bring chamber music to smaller communities in the U.S.; and the Orchestra Residencies Program (ORP), which supports American youth orchestras. In recognition of her work as an artist and humanitarian, she serves as a United Nations Messenger of Peace, and in 2021, she was named a Kennedy Center Honoree.
In November, Midori performs a new work, Resonances of Spirit, for violin and electronics, written for her by the young New York-based violinist and composer Che Buford. The world premiere takes place at Williams College in Williamstown, MA, where Midori returns in February for a residency. The recital program also includes works by Beethoven, Poulenc, Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann and Schubert.
Born in Osaka in 1971, she began her violin studies with her mother, Setsu Goto, at an early age. In 1982, conductor Zubin Mehta invited the then 11-year-old Midori to perform with the New York Philharmonic in the orchestra’s annual New Year’s Eve concert, where the foundation was laid for her subsequent career. Midori recently joined the faculty of the Juilliard School; she is the Dorothy Richard Starling Chair in Violin Studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and Artistic Director of Ravinia Steans Music Institute’s Piano & Strings program. She is the recipient of honorary doctorates from Smith College, Yale University, Longy School of Music and Shenandoah University, and of the 2023 Brandeis Creative Arts Award from Brandeis University.Midori was born in Osaka in 1971 and began her violin studies with her mother, Setsu Goto, at an early age. “Midori & Friends changed the direction of my life by exposing me to people, art, and opportunities I never would’ve found on my own, and making me feel like I belonged there.
NEXTGen exposed me to artists and mentors who showed me that imagination, emotion, and experimentation are often what make leadership the most meaningful.”
Katerina Bala, NEXTGen Alum
