Makiko is Vice Chair of the board of Tanaka lkueikai Educational Foundation, which operates Technos College in Tokyo, Japan. She is also President of the Tanaka Memorial Foundation, which supports education and charitable causes internationally. Makiko serves on several other boards and is a Fellow of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award World Fellowship. She is also a Member of the Master’s Circle of Oxford, Pembroke College. She graduated from the University of the Sacred Heart in Tokyo and subsequently spent a year as a visiting researcher at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at The Johns Hopkins University. In May 2011, Makiko received an honorary doctoral degree from Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
