The Breathtaking Program

Crescendo Circle members were enraptured by an hour-long musical dialogue featuring a captivating collaboration between Midori and Jonathan Biss. The internationally acclaimed artists commenced the concert with Mozart’s Sonata for Piano and Violin, KV 303, setting the stage for the awe-inspiring sounds that followed.

Taking the solo spotlight, Jonathan Biss masterfully performed Franz Schubert’s Impromptu in F minor, D. 935 no. 1, and in B-flat Major, D. 935 no. 3. Biss generously shared his profound connection to the piece, expressing, “Schubert’s music accomplishes something unique. He has a way of conveying the essence of solitude and loneliness. It’s expressed so beautifully. I feel like he puts you in touch with a vulnerable part of yourself that doesn’t always find expression, and I admire him greatly for that.”

The grand finale of the program was Maurice Ravel’s Sonata for Violin and Piano, a duet that showcased the power of the artists’ interpretation and technique. Post-concert, Biss reflected on the profound collaboration with Midori throughout their careers, stating, “We really understand each other musically and also as people. I think the way we view the world, the things we consider to be important, again both artistically and as a member of society, we have been aligned on those things.” This connection was unmistakably conveyed through the harmonious sounds, physicality, and energy emanating from the two artists at Steinway Hall.
