NYC DOE and The Summer Arts Institute
July 5, 2018
Throughout the school year, M&F closely collaborates with the NYC Department of Education (DOE) on all of our programs and ensures that our initiatives align with and complement their music education goals. The DOE invited M&F to play a leadership role and co-facilitate the String Program at its Summer Arts Institute. The NYC DOE Summer Arts Institute is a free intensive audition-based program for public middle and high school students to pursue their studies in the performing and visual arts during summer vacation.
Since 2014, our Violin Teaching Artist, Charisa Rouse has worked with Director Barry Stern to improve the students’ core musical skills and master diverse repertoire that ranges from Bernstein to Tchaikovsky to Michael Jackson. Each season, we actively promote the program to our more advanced middle and high school students and encourage them to audition. This year 43 M&F students will participate in the Summer Arts Institute from July 9-August 3. We are currently in our 5th year of partnership with the Summer Arts Institute and our students will receive strings (violin, viola, cello, and double bass) instruction.
