The festival was a spectacular experience for the students and me! Thank you for giving our students this wonderful opportunity. I look forward to working with Midori & Friends against next year.

The Midori & Friends Children's Music Festival, now in its fourth year, involves children, parents, and educators in music, literacy, and music-themed art workshops that culminate in free, public concerts. These concerts, held at professional venues, give children the chance to showcase their accomplishments and work side-by-side with professional adult musicians. Featuring music by and for kids, the Midori & Friends Children's Music Festival fosters involvement, unity, and pride in all participants and strongly affirms the importance of music in the lives of our City's children. In 2006, the standing room only audience at Symphony Space included parents, children, school administrators, and the general public from 57 zip codes throughout New York City.

The Festival began in 2006 with a dream of bringing children from different boroughs together to celebrate their musical accomplishments with each other, their families, and the broader New York City community. The 2007-08 festival, entitled Harmony’s Happening, began in May with an event produced in partnership with the Sony Wonder Technology Lab. The event, inspired by Children’s Day celebrations in Japan, featured global music, craft workshops, and opportunities to explore the exhibits at the Sony Wonder Technology Lab. The concert, which took place in the Sony Plaza Public Arcade, was hosted by Fred Katayama of Reuters television; welcome remarks were delivered by Mrs. Nobuku Sakurai, wife of the Ambassador and Counsel General of Japan in New York and Midori & Friends Board Member Nozomi Terao. The festival continued in June with a concert at El Museo del Barrio. Hosted by Maggie Rodriguez, Co-Anchor CBS’ New The Early Show, the event featured more than 160 children performing side by side with professional adult musicians. Over 1,000 people attended this year’s festival and several hundred participated in pre-festival workshops.
