Midori & Friends Music Club
Where kids and parents play together!
Music of the Month
It’s spring….a great time for spending time outdoors! And what better instrument to play under the sun (or the stars for that matter) than a guitar? May is also the month of the Midori & Friends Guitarfest!, a free, fun filled, family day created in partnership with the Sony Wonder Technology Lab. Guitarfest! is taking place at the Sony Lab on Sunday, May 31st between 12-4. Click on the images below to learn more about the exciting concerts, workshops, and interactive presentations taking place on this day:
Schedule: |
For more information please call Midori & Friends at (212) 767-1300. For directions, visit the Sony Wonder Technology Lab.
To tune up for this festive day, we suggest you listen to—what else?—the guitar? You might want to start with the Amazing Guitar Kid, Sungha Jung. Sungha can be found all over the web, playing pieces with names like (Nirvana) Smells like Teen Spirit; California Dreaming; Pirate of the Caribbean and many others. Try googling “Sungha Jung video” and see what appears on your screen.
And while you are at the computer, how about a sneak preview of a few of the outstanding artists who will be featured at the May 31 Guitarfest at Sony? To hear some pieces by special guest artist Benjamin Verdery, go to www.benverdery.com. You can also visit the 1 East Guitar Quartet at www.1EastGQ.com.
And because every culture has plucked instruments, the festival will also feature cultural cousins of the guitar such as the African nogoni, the Chinese pipa, and Arabian oud. Hear a clip of the pipa. As you listen to The Great Waves Washing the Sand, close your eyes. What images do you see?Side By Side
Music and food make a great combo. And since the guitar is the national instrument of Spain, how about cooking up a pot of paella, one of the national dishes of Spain? Find a great paella recipe (and some history too!).
While your paella is cooking, google “Andres Segovia Asturias”. You can also google “Andres Segovia” to find other wonderful videos featuring this legendary guitarist. You might also try googling the contemporary Spanish guitar master, “Paco De Lucia”. Type his name in your search bar and lots of exciting videos will appear!Book of the Month

Every few months, the Midori & Friends Music Club page mounts an online exhibition of children’s pictures inspired by music. However, this month we thought it would be fun to hang some graphic pictures inspired by the guitar—and provide you with pages to print out and decorate yourself.
