Brrrr…it’s cold outside! To help chase away the chills, our month’s musical pick is a song called Sofrito! Written and performed by David Gonzalez with Larry Harlow and the Latin Legends Band, I think you’ll agree this piece is sizzling hot! For a look and listen, go to http://www.rainartproductions.com/video, and click on the word sofrito in the list of demo videos.Don’t be afraid to shimmy, shake, and sing along!
Just as sofrito, a famous sauce found in many Latin cultures, is created with lots of tasty ingredients, David needed ingredients for his piece too—musical ingredients! Can you list some of those musical ingredients? When you’re done, you can send your list to musicclub@midoriandfriends.org.
Hint: what kinds of instruments did David, Larry, and the Latin Legends Band use to play Sofrito?Side By Side
How about cooking up a pot of sofrito? For a great recipe just click www.allrecipes.com and type ‘sofrito’ in the search bar. And while your sofrito sauce is bubbling away, why not whip up some music? Spoons, glasses, pots, and pans make great percussion instruments!
Parents, you might want to inspire your children by showing them some videos of people playing on kitchen utensils. Try googling different words or phrases such as 'video of kitchen percussion', 'video of kitchen drums', 'video of spoon music', 'culinary rockstars', and others. You might also want to visit a popular video website. Share what you've discovered and previewed with your children.Book of the Month
Pots and Pans and Spoons, Oh My: Making Music with Found Sounds
Written by Cathy Blair
Publisher: Heritage House
Product Description (Amazon.com)
Utilizing everything from water bottles to empty wastebaskets to whisks, and, of course, pots and pans and spoons, the music in this collection will help build children’s rhythmic independence and sense of constant tempo, and improve their counting skills. Most of the pieces can be taught by rote, or by using the reproducible student parts, and the included CD features optional accompaniments as well as several performance models.
Music Gallery
Every month, the Midori & Friends Music Club page will feature artwork by children and their parents about music and musicians. We’ve hung a few pictures already, but we still have plenty of digital wall space.
You might want to listen to a piece of music together and draw or paint what the music makes you feel (be sure to identify the piece and composer!), or create images of your favorite instrument, composer, or performer!
Please email us a scan of your artwork, (musicclub@midoriandfriends.org) or else send us a copy via snail mail. We cannot guarantee that we can post every picture you send, but we will do our best!
Also, please note that Midori & Friends is not responsible for sending back original artwork or copies.
