First Adventures in Sound
Children’s natural proclivity to raise their voices and move their bodies is our starting point in Adventures in Sound, our core music education residency for young learners. Using a curriculum created in collaboration with the early childhood faculty at Columbia University’s Teacher’s College, the program has been developed for students in the first and second grade. A sub-division of the program, First Adventures in Sound, is offered to pre-K and K children.
Students sing, dance and use their bodies expressively, play hand percussion instruments, listen to and learn lyrics in foreign languages, and perform in simple ensembles. They further learn the basic concepts of music, including melody, rhythm, timbre, and pitch. A special “Song Creations” unit leads them through their first songwriting experiences. Most importantly, they learn the joy, fun, and communicative power of music.
