On Saturday, May 17th, 2008, Midori & Friends, in partnership with Sony Wonder Technology Lab, presented Children's Day, a family-friendly event inspired by traditional Japanese celebrations of kodomo no hi. Hosted by Reuters Television anchor Fred Katayama, the concert featured interactive musical performances by soprano Asako Tamura, the Glee club from Midori & Friends partner school P.S. 139Q, koto player Masayo Ishigure and Koto Ensemble Miyabi, taiko drumming by New York Taiko Aiko Kai/Teachers College Taiko Society, and African drumming by Midori & Friends Adventure Concert artists Drum Café. Special opening remarks were given by Midori & Friends Board member Nozomi Terao and Mrs. Nobuko Sakurai, Wife of the Ambassador and Consul General of Japan in New York.
Fun-filled arts and crafts workshops preceeded the concert. Attendees enjoyed decorating domroo drums, making carp kites, drawing, coloring and learning to craft origami flowers, swans, and samurai hats. The audience also had an opportunity to explore exhibits at the Sony Wonder Technology Lab.
Midori & Friends would like to extend special thanks to: Lisa Davis, Karen Kelso, and Corrine Doron of Sony and the Sony Wonder Technology Lab; Madam Sakurai; Fred Katayama; Children's Day Planning Committee members Board member Nozomi Terao, Board member Geeta Sharma, Luz Ghiso, and David Janes of the United States-Japan Foundation; Ito En; Kinokuniya; Yamaha; Goldman Sachs' Community TeamWorks; and all of our wonderful volunteers and performing artists.
