December 2, 2008 Special Adventure Concert featuring Alvin Atkinson and the Sound Merchants in honor of Janet Barkan
On Tuesday, December 2nd, jazz drummer Alvin Atkinson and his group the Sound Merchants performed a very special Adventure Concert honoring long-time friend and supporter Janet Barkan at P.S. 182 in Jamaica, Queens.
Ms. Barkan was instrumental to the revitalization of Jamaica and through the Jamaica Center Improvement Association, her generosity has provided Midori & Friends music education programs at P.S. 182 for the past five years. President Judi Linden presented Janet’s family with a framed token of appreciation and announced the initiation of The Janet Barkan Music Fund, a new scholarship fund which will further the musical education of children at P.S. 182.
Though Janet's health prevented her from being present, her husband Joel, daughter Shana, and granddaughter Heather as well as some of her closest colleagues and friends from The Jamaica Center Improvement Association, Greater Jamaica Development Corporation, King Manor Museum, and others were present to pay tribute to Janet. After the concert, Mr. Barkan wrote to “graciously thank the Midori & Friends staff, the P.S. 182 principal, teachers and staff for a most special morning that I, my family and most importantly, Janet, will long remember.”
