Adventure Concerts and Workshops
A West African djembe rhythm has students bouncing in their seats. Children shout out “Maracatu!” in a rousing call-and-response with a Brazilian band. A 4th grade class whirls across a stage to traditional Mexican refrains. These are but a few glimpses of the global journeys we lead in partner schools through our Adventure Concert and Workshop programs. From South America to the Middle East, from ancient Chinese and Japanese courts to African villages, we take students on musical excursions full of cultural and historical discoveries that open their ears, expand their minds, and touch their souls.
Learn about our special Adventure Concert Artists and Ensembles.
We bring world-class artists from around the globe into schools for two different types of educational experiences. Our Adventure Concerts are dynamic, interactive musical presentations that are encapsulated in single morning or afternoon sessions. Our Adventure Workshops off er students an involvement of greater depth in a series that presents a stimulating concert with three to ten integrated pre- or post-concert workshops. In the classroom workshops, students glean not only musical and cultural knowledge from our masterful artists but also insight into what it takes to achieve artistic excellence and to maintain a professional music career. Each workshop series concludes with students performing music alongside these celebrated performing artists.
Our 2010-2011 artist roster featured, among others, Japanese drumming ensemble Manhattan Taiko, Brazilian fusion band Nation Beat, the lively and elegant Spanish ensemble Fiesta Flamenca, virtuoso oud player Simon Shaheen, West African troupe ForestDance, the Indian ensemble Manjari, Mexico Beyond Mariachi, and violin master Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul.
